bleh

I've realized that I don't like reading reviews anymore prior to a video game or movie's release. Infact, It's often more compelling to watch movies without having read any reviews and just checking out sites for the synopsis and, perhaps, the concensus of the movie. Recently, Far Cry 2(a video game) came out and it had been hyped up to the point of biblical proportions. I don't know what to say really, except that I was thoroughly disappointed with the game. The parts that are good are great. I haven't played much of it, so I won't review it; however, what I can, and will, say is that if I hadn't fallen into the hype-of-shit, I would probably have liked the game a lot more.

The graphics aren't amazing, but they'll get the job done; the gameplay--aside from a few outstanding features, is rather trite. Perhaps if I was into the story, it'd have become more compelling, but I am not. They had so much potential to work with, and instead of working on making the game great, they simply worked on a few features and then said, "fuck it". It's like looking at a relatively nice house, then walking in through the front door, just to see a toilet in the middle of a fully-furnished livingroom. My point is that it has a lot of niceties, but has such glaring issues that can't be ignored. The gun controls suck; reminds me of brothers in arms, and that's not a good thing. When I kill someone, I don't feel invigorated, but rather unsatisfied.

What really compounds these issues is that even the user reviews on gamespot, where people give it a 2/10--which is ridiculous enough--cite the exact same reasons as I just did, so it's difficult to argue with it. Overall, a colossal disappointment from what I thought would be a revolutionary installment to the FPS genre.

That being said, fuck the world!

Comments:
Just as an aside, you know how I keep hailing deus ex? I was reading reviews for Fallout 3 and now I really want to play it... because it reminds me of Deus Ex. We've discussed this before, but it's interesting how Deus Ex, with its crappy NPC AI and moderately dated graphics, not to mention some glaring issues here and there, was phenomenal because if its immersiveness, open-endedness and story. Farcry 2 has failed you for exactly that.

That being said, jump on the Fallout 3 bandwagon. Gamespot's only real critique was:

* The story and characters can feel a bit sterile
* Combat feels mildly clunky.

These aren't faults, they're forceful nitpicking.

All in all, I probably will still attempt to play both Far Cry 2, STALKER and Fallout :P.

Far cry 2 disappointed me mainly because of the hype. As much as I hate to say it, they made the game for consoles, not the PC (despite being touted as PC-exclusive when the news first broke out about the game). That being said, Deus Ex had more of a story, I presume. FarCry 2 does not seem to have it. I can deal with shitty AI and poor graphics if the story is good; not the other way around.

I REALLY want to play fallout 3, actually. I read the reviews, myself, and I can honestly say that I'd like it. I've been playing oblivion recently, and even though it's different, many things are similar and I actually like these FPS-RPG games. I'll play more of FarCry 2 and then determine how good/bad it really is.

I don't have an opinion on those games, as I generally don't play games on the comp. However, I do have an opinion on reading movie reviews.

I do find reviews useful, but usually only for movies that I'm not sure about in order to help me guide the spending of my hard-earned movie-money. If I'm planning to see the movie anyways (eg. The Dark Knight), I don't really need to read a review. And if I do, it's just for pure curiosity, not to help me make a decision.

Well reading a review here and there is okay. But looking at many reviews consistently just to see if the hype remains, definitely sucks. I would've probably loved the dark knight even more had I not hyped it up too much for myself. From now on, I'll just check the ratings, the synopsis and the consensus and make my decision based on that, unless it's something that I've always wanted to see.

For example, I'll be watching the quantum of solace no matter what so it doesn't bother me that it's only at like 70-odd % in terms of ratings.

Exactly! And I can't wait for QoS!
